Cheers of HOORAY can be heard from kids and teachers throughout the country. It is a good time for students and teachers to rest, and get ready for the coming year.
This is a good time for parents to work on their children's behavior. While some kids enter the classroom with good behavior, many do not. It is not the responsibility of a teacher to teach children manners and how to behave well, in spite of what most people think. It is the responsibility of a teacher to educate students. It is the responsibility of parents to raise children with manners and respect for others.
When a student has not been properly trained by their parents on how to behave; the student disrupts the classroom, hinders the students who want to learn, and drives the teachers crazy. I think some parents think that teachers have a magic wand when the kids walk into the classroom; they wave the wand around, and all of the kids suddenly behave and begin to thirst for knowledge.
Our culture is deteriorating rapidly. In the classroom, the biggest challenge most teachers face today is discipline problems. It takes at least four years to earn a college degree for a teacher to be quialifed to teach, and it is not fair that a they must spend a great deal of their time trying to make children sit down and listen. I'm sure that some new teachers are shocked when confronted with the "reality" of teaching some children who can care less about learning.
The educational system needs to be fixed. Sure, there are some bad teachers, but the biggest problem is the behavior of the students. In putting more computers, etcerta, into the classrooms, the administrators of school systems are trying to improve the system. It's not working. It is like trying to put a new roof and shore up the stud walls in a house, when the foundation is deteriorating and crumbling under the new additions. The students are the foundation of any school system.
Let's all do our part in "fixing" the educational system.
