There is nothing like a best friend. While I have a lot of good/casual friends, I have several best friends. What qualifies someone to be my best friend? It is someone that I can tell most of my secrets to and not worry about being judged; can call on a whim without worrying that I am being bothersome; is there for me through thick and thin.
I have been lucky enough to have several best friends in my lifetime. One of them lived in Florida and has passed away. When she was on her dying bed, I went to see her. Her last words to me was, "I wish I had met you ten years sooner." We had a ton of fun together. I always remember her when I order a Reuben sandwich. When I lived in Florida, where I met her, we would play golf almost every day and end up at the club house ordering Reuben sandwiches and laughing about stupid stuff.
I have a best friend now that I met in college when I was studying for a degree in nursing. My husband told me once, "I always know when you are talking to Mary." I asked him how did he know that fact. He replied, "Because you laugh a lot."
