July 26, 2009 - WHO'S WATCHING YOU?

This is Sunday and I went to church this morning. The pastor called the little children to the front of the pulpit and gave them a children's mini-sermon. This act reminded me of a children's sermon given by a pastor in Destin, FL in the 1980's.

He told the children this story: He told them about the church having some sort of trouble with an important "pump" (I have forgotten) of some kind that was used by the church. The pump broke down and there was only one parts company that carried the part. The pastor called and was told the part would be there ASAP. It didn't come. Calling again and again, he always got an excuse but that it would be shipped soon. It didn't come. He began to write letters and continued to call...to no avail. He got extremely exasperated with this company.

He and his family went on vacation and he drove out of his way to go to this parts company to confront them in person. He got another excuse as to why the part had not been shipped. By this time, the pastor was beside himself and ready to absolutely explode at the person at the counter. Struggling with all his might, he managed to hold his temper and turned to leave.

Just as he turned, the man behind him said, "Rev. Johnson...I thought that was you. My family and I were in Destin a couple of months ago and visited your church. We were very impressed with you and the church."

Who's watching you? I worked in a place once that made all their patients watch a video titled: "Watch out...you are establishing a reputation."

  1. Hi Audrey,

Your relating the story about the minister was really relevant to how I feel this Monday morning. I'll draw on the message to make it through this stressful day. Your friend, Ruth
